Saint Adalbert

Saint Adalbert was a bishop and missionary. He lived in the 900s. He was born in Bohemia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. His birth name was Vojtěch. He later took the name Adalbert when he was confirmed.

Adalbert came from a noble family. He had a good education. He became a priest and later a bishop. He wanted to teach people about Jesus. He also wanted the Church to be holy and strong.

After leaving Prague, Adalbert wanted to preach to people who had never heard of Jesus. He traveled to different lands. He went to Hungary, Poland, and later to the land of the Prussians. These were places where many people still followed old religions.

In Hungary, Adalbert helped spread the Christian faith. He also helped teach new priests. Then he went to Poland. The Polish ruler, Duke Bolesław, welcomed him. Adalbert stayed there for a short time. He helped teach and baptize many people.

Adalbert wanted to go even farther. He asked the Pope if he could preach to the Prussians. These people lived near the Baltic Sea. They did not know the Gospel. The Pope gave him permission to go.

Adalbert traveled with a small group. They carried a cross and the Bible. They went into new villages and spoke about Jesus. Some people listened. Others were afraid or angry. But Adalbert kept going. He knew this was the mission God had given him.

Adalbert and his companions entered Prussian land in the year 997. The people there were not Christians. Many of them did not want to hear about the Gospel. They followed their own gods and did not trust outsiders.

At first, Adalbert tried to speak to the people with kindness. He told them about Jesus. He explained God’s love. Some listened, but others became angry. They warned him to leave. He did not leave. He stayed and kept preaching.

One day, a group of men came to where Adalbert was praying. They told him to stop teaching about Jesus. He did not stop. They struck him with spears and killed him. He died near the Baltic Sea. He was around 41 years old.

His friends took his body back to Poland. The Polish ruler, Duke Bolesław, honored him. He paid money to get Adalbert’s body back. He buried him in Gniezno, a holy place in Poland.

Adalbert is called a martyr. A martyr is someone who dies for the faith. He gave his life so others could know Jesus. His death showed his strong love for Christ.

After his death, many people began to honor Saint Adalbert. They remembered his courage and his faith. His grave in Gniezno became a place of prayer. People came there to ask for his help.
