Pope Saint Miltiades

Pope Saint Miltiades was also known as Melchiades. He was pope during a very important time in Church history. He became pope in the year 311. This was right before Christianity became legal in the Roman Empire.

Miltiades was the first pope to serve when Christians were no longer being hunted and punished by the government. He helped guide the Church through this big change. He did not serve for a long time, but his time as pope made a difference.

Miltiades became pope in 311. The Roman Empire was still dangerous for Christians, but things were starting to change. In 313, Emperor Constantine gave Christians the right to worship freely. This was a big change.

The Edict of Milan was the name of the law that brought this change. Miltiades did not write it, but he saw it happen. He was the first pope to live in this new freedom. This was a big shift from fear to peace.

Miltiades helped the Church learn how to live in this new time. The Church could now worship in public. Christians could own buildings. They could gather without fear. This was all new.

Not everyone agreed on how to move forward. Some groups in the Church were divided. One of these groups was the Donatists. They argued about who had the right to lead and what to do about those who had denied the faith during persecution.

Miltiades tried to keep the Church united. He held meetings to settle disputes. He showed patience and care. He wanted peace, not fighting.

One big event during Miltiades’ time as pope was the gift of the Lateran Palace. Emperor Constantine gave it to the Church. This was a major step for Christians.

Before this, Christians had no official buildings. They met in homes or in secret places. The gift of the Lateran Palace gave them a center for worship and leadership.
