Saint Oscar Romero

Saint Óscar Romero is known for his deep love for the poor and his bravery during hard times in El Salvador. His full name is Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez. Sometimes he is called Archbishop Romero or just Monsignor Romero. Most people simply call him Saint Óscar Romero.

He became famous because he stood up against injustice. He spoke loudly when many others stayed quiet. He defended the poor, even though it was dangerous. His words gave hope to many people who were suffering.

Óscar Romero lived during a time of great violence in his country. Many people were afraid to speak out. But Romero believed that the Church must be close to the poor and the suffering. He said that the voice of the Church must also be the voice of the voiceless.

Óscar Romero was born on August 15, 1917, in Ciudad Barrios, a small town in El Salvador. His family was poor but hardworking. His father worked as a telegraph operator and wanted Óscar to learn a trade. But even as a boy, Óscar felt called to serve the Church.

He was one of eight children. Life was not easy for the Romero family. Óscar helped his family by working small jobs. Even so, he found time to pray and study. His deep faith was clear from a young age.

At thirteen, Óscar entered a minor seminary to begin studying for the priesthood. Later, he went to Rome to continue his education. While he was there, his father and mother both passed away. He suffered from homesickness but stayed strong in his calling.

Óscar was ordained a priest in 1942 in Rome. Afterward, he returned to El Salvador to begin his ministry. His early years as a priest showed his love for simple people. He worked hard to bring the Gospel to those who were often forgotten.

At first, Óscar Romero was seen as a quiet and careful priest. He was not known for speaking out on social issues. He believed that priests should focus mostly on prayer and preaching. Many people thought he would never challenge the government.

In 1970, Romero was made a bishop. He served in different places, always focusing on his flock. In 1977, he was named Archbishop of San Salvador. Many were surprised. Some Church leaders hoped he would keep quiet and not cause trouble.

At the time, El Salvador was facing growing violence. Poor people were often mistreated by the government and by the rich. Many priests who worked with the poor were threatened or even killed. The Church was in a hard position.

At first, Romero stayed careful. But everything changed when one of his close friends, Father Rutilio Grande, was murdered for helping the poor. After this, Romero began to speak out clearly against injustice. He realized that staying silent would only help the oppressors.

After the death of Father Grande, Romero became a strong voice for the poor and suffering. He used his sermons, broadcast over the radio, to tell the truth about the violence in El Salvador. His words reached people across the country.

Romero often spoke about the killings, disappearances, and injustices done to the poor. He asked soldiers to refuse unjust orders. He told them they must obey God first, not men. This made him many enemies among the rich and powerful.

Even though Romero received death threats, he refused to stop. He believed that the role of the Church was to stand with the oppressed. He said that if he were killed, he would rise again in the people.

Romero did not hate his enemies. He preached forgiveness but also justice. He said the Church cannot remain silent when people suffer. Many people saw him as a true shepherd who cared for his flock.

On March 24, 1980, Romero was celebrating Mass in a small chapel at a hospital. As he finished his sermon, a gunman entered and shot him. He fell to the ground, still wearing his priestly vestments. He died almost instantly.

The news of his death shocked El Salvador and the world. Thousands of people attended his funeral. Sadly, even during the funeral, violence broke out, and many mourners were hurt or killed.

Romero’s death showed how dangerous it was to speak for the poor. But it also showed how much he loved his people. He gave his life in service to the truth of the Gospel.

Even today, Romero’s words and life continue to challenge people. He reminds us that following Jesus means standing with the weak, even when it is hard or dangerous.

Óscar Romero was beatified on May 23, 2015, in San Salvador. He was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis on October 14, 2018, in Rome. Many Catholics had prayed for years for this to happen.

His feast day is March 24, the day he was killed. He is the patron saint of El Salvador, as well as those who seek justice and peace.

Saint Óscar Romero’s legacy is still alive. He is seen as a symbol of hope for the poor and for all who suffer under injustice. His life shows that even one voice can make a difference.
