Pope Saint Soter

Pope Saint Soter lived in the second century. He served as pope during a time when the Church was still young. His name is usually given as Soter. That name means “savior” in Greek. It is the only name we know for him.

He became pope around the year 166. He followed Pope Anicetus and led the Church during a time of growth. There were still dangers from the Roman Empire, but many people were joining the faith.

Soter was known for his care and kindness. He helped poor Christians and sent support to other churches. He believed in serving others and showing love, especially in hard times.

He may have served in the Church in Rome before becoming pope. He must have been respected and trusted. In those times, popes were chosen for their faith and wisdom.

The Church was not legal under Roman law, so Christians had to be careful. Even so, the Christian community in Rome was growing.

He made clear rules for widows in the Church, saying they should live with respect and holiness. This showed his concern for order and care in Church life.

The Roman Empire did not trust Christians. Many leaders feared the Church’s growth. Some Christians were jailed or killed for their faith.
