Saint Ivo of Kermartin

Saint Ivo of Kermartin is known for helping the poor and standing up for justice. He lived in France during the 13th century. He is often called Saint Yves or Saint Ives. In Latin, his name is Ivo. But most people know him as Saint Ivo. He is remembered most as the patron saint of lawyers.

Saint Ivo was both a priest and a lawyer. This was unusual at the time. He worked hard to help people who had no money. He cared deeply about fairness. He never took bribes. He always tried to do what was right.

He did not use his position to gain wealth or power. Instead, he helped widows, orphans, and anyone who needed a voice. He worked in the courts, but he also served in the Church. He believed the law should protect the weak.

Saint Ivo was born in 1253 in a village called Kermartin. This is in Brittany, a part of France. His family was noble but not rich. They owned some land. His parents were Christian and raised him with strong values.

As a boy, Ivo was quiet and kind. He liked to read and pray. He did not enjoy games as much as learning. People noticed that he was wise, even when he was young.

When he was old enough, his parents sent him to study in Paris. He studied arts and law. Later, he went to Orléans to study more about the law. He learned both civil law and Church law. This helped him later when he worked as a judge.

While he was a student, Ivo lived a simple life. He fasted and prayed often. He gave money to the poor. He stayed away from bad influences. He wanted to serve God, not himself.

He was a smart student. His teachers respected him. But he did not become proud. He remembered where he came from. He kept his focus on serving others and doing what was right.

After school, Ivo became a lawyer. He later became a judge. He worked in Rennes and then in Tréguier. These were towns in Brittany. People trusted him because he was honest. He would not take money to change his decision.

He listened to the poor just as carefully as he listened to the rich. He never let power or wealth influence his choices. If someone had no money to pay a lawyer, Ivo would help them for free.

His feast day is May 19. On that day, many people, especially in France, remember him. In Brittany, there are parades and prayers. Lawyers in many countries also honor him.
