St. Maximilian Kolbe

St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar. He was imprisoned at the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. When a prisoner escaped from the camp, the commandant ordered that ten men be starved to death as punishment. When one of the selected men cried out for his family, St. Maximilian offered to die in his place. While being starved, he prayed with the other victims.

His feast day is August 14.
