Summary: Jesus asked his disciples who people thought he was. Peter declared him to be the Christ. Jesus then foretold his suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection, and warned the disciples to keep silent about it.
Gospel Acclamation: The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)
Once, when Jesus was praying alone and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” They answered, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah, and still others think you are one of the ancient prophets who has come back to life.” Then he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter replied, “The Christ of God.” Jesus then rebuked them and told them not to share this with anyone.
He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly, be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise on the third day.”
