Gospel for St. Angela Merici

Mark 9:34b-37

Summary: Jesus addressed his disciples' debate about greatness, teaching them that true leadership means being the last and serving all. Emphasizing his point, he embraced a child, illustrating that welcoming the humblest person is akin to welcoming both Jesus and God, the Father who sent him.

True Greatness in Service

The disciples of Jesus had been discussing on the way who was the greatest. Jesus sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all."

Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around him, he said to them, "Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me."
