Setup Instructions:

  1. Attach the kitchen timer securely to the bottom or inside the crocodile plush toy. Make sure the ticking sound is clearly audible.
  2. Choose a room with plenty of hiding spots. Avoid areas with fragile or dangerous items.
  3. Gather the children and explain the rules of the game. Share the story of Captain Hook and the crocodile if desired.

Story of Captain Hook and the Crocodile

Captain Hook was a pirate captain who had a big fear—Tick-Tock the Crocodile. This crocodile once swallowed an alarm clock, so you could always hear a ticking sound when it was nearby. The reason Tick-Tock chased Captain Hook was because, during a fight, Peter Pan cut off Hook’s hand and fed it to the crocodile. The croc loved the taste and wanted more!

Hook was always on edge, listening for the ticking sound. He knew it meant the crocodile was close. Even though he was a fierce pirate, Hook was filled with fear whenever he heard that clock. His fear controlled him, making him feel nervous all the time.

This story reminds us that fear can take over our lives if we let it. But with God’s help, we can face our fears and trust Him to guide us through whatever makes us anxious. Just like Captain Hook listened carefully for the ticking, we can learn to listen for God’s voice to feel safe and calm.

Game Play Instructions:

  1. Select one child to be “Captain Hook.” Ask them to step out of the room so they cannot see or hear where the crocodile is hidden.
  2. Let the remaining children choose a hiding spot for the ticking crocodile. The spot should not be too difficult to reach but should still provide a challenge.
  3. Set the kitchen timer for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Call Captain Hook back into the room. Their job is to listen carefully for the ticking sound and find the crocodile before the timer runs out.
  5. If Captain Hook finds the crocodile before the timer rings, they earn one point. If they don’t, the other players earn one point as a group.
  6. Rotate roles so each child gets a turn as Captain Hook.
  7. At the end of the game, tally the points to see who scored the most.

Additional Notes:

  • Variations: Instead of using a timer, let players take turns hiding the crocodile for extra fun. You can also play the game in silence for added focus.
  • Safety: Ensure the hiding spots are safe and accessible. Avoid hiding the crocodile in high or hard-to-reach places.
  • Non-Competitive Option: Skip the points and play just for fun. Focus on the joy of searching and listening.
