Instructions
Write the Word
Give each participant a washable marker. Ask them to write the word “sin” on their hand. If the setting allows for privacy, they can write a specific sin on their palm instead.
Take Time to Reflect
Allow a few minutes for silent prayer. If the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available, encourage participants to go to confession at this time.
Wash It Away
Invite participants to approach the basin of water. They can wash the word “sin” off their hands. Alternatively, a youth leader or another participant can help wash their hands as a sign of support. If privacy is a concern, participants can keep their palms down during the washing.
Pray Together
Gather everyone to close the service by praying an excerpt from Psalm 51. This prayer asks for God’s mercy and a clean heart.
Have mercy on me, God, in accord with your merciful love;
in your abundant compassion blot out my transgressions.
Thoroughly wash away my guilt;
and from my sin cleanse me.
Behold, you desire true sincerity;
and secretly you teach me wisdom.
A clean heart create for me, God;
renew within me a steadfast spirit.
Lord, you will open my lips;
and my mouth will proclaim your praise.
For you do not desire sacrifice or I would give it;
a burnt offering you would not accept.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit;
a contrite, humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn.Psalm 51: 3-4, 7, 12, 17-19
