December 28 is the feast day of the Holy Innocents. The Holy Innocents were the babies who were murdered by Herod as told in Matthew 2:16-18:
When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet: “A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more.”
This feast day reminds us of the vulnerability of children. As a parent, the world can seem a dangerous place to send our children out into. But we must remember that they are gifts from God and that they belong to God. We must place them in His hands.
So on the feast day of the Holy Innocents, bless your children with a traditional Jewish blessing from Numbers 6:24-26. Trace the sign of the cross on your child’s forehead when you say the blessing:
The Lord bless you and keep you!
The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you!
The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!
