Saint Sebastian

As Sebastian grew older, he moved to Rome. He became a soldier in the Roman army. He was a good soldier. He did his work well. The emperor trusted him. No one knew he was a Christian.

Sebastian joined the army for a reason. He wanted to help other Christians. He believed he could do more good from the inside. By working in the army, he could protect others. He could also bring comfort to those in prison.

Even though he lived among soldiers, he stayed close to God. He prayed often. He helped the poor. He visited Christians who were suffering. He did all of this quietly, without drawing attention.

Diocletian gave the order to kill him. He told his soldiers to tie Sebastian to a tree. Then they shot arrows at him. His body was full of arrows. They left him there, thinking he was dead.

But Sebastian did not die. A Christian woman found him still alive. She took him to her house and cared for him. He slowly got better. He did not run away or hide. He was not afraid. He was ready to speak out again, even after all he had been through.

People were shocked that he lived. It was a strong sign of his courage and faith. He had faced death and was still standing. But his story was not over yet.

After Sebastian got better, he went back to the emperor. He stood in front of Diocletian and spoke again. He told him to stop hurting Christians. He said the truth must be known. He was not afraid. He wanted to speak for those who could not.

Diocletian was shocked. He thought Sebastian was dead. He was angry that Sebastian had survived. This time, he gave a new order. He told his men to beat Sebastian to death. They took clubs and struck him until he died.

Sebastian’s body was left in the open. The soldiers did not bury him. But a Christian woman named Lucina took his body. She buried him in the catacombs in Rome. These were underground places where Christians buried their dead and sometimes prayed in secret.

Soon, many people came to pray at his grave. They saw him as a brave witness for Jesus. His story spread quickly. The Church began to honor him as a martyr. He was remembered not just for how he died, but for how he lived. His grave became a place of prayer, and his name was spoken with respect.
