Saint Lucian of Antioch

Saint Lucian is also called Lucian of Antioch. Some people call him Lucian of Samosata. He lived a long time ago, around the year 240 to 312. He is remembered as a priest, a teacher, and a martyr.

Lucian loved the Bible. He spent much of his life studying and copying it. He wanted to make sure that people had the true words of Scripture. Many people in the early Church looked up to him.

He lived during a hard time for Christians. They were not free to worship. Many were killed because they followed Jesus. Lucian stayed faithful even when it cost him his life.

Lucian was born in Samosata, a town on the banks of the Euphrates River. It is in what we now call Syria. Not much is known about his parents, but some say they were Christians.

However, Lucian lived during a time when Christians were often arrested. The Roman Emperor did not like Christians. Lucian knew that his work and his faith could cost him his life.

Lucian was arrested during the rule of Emperor Maximinus Daia. The emperor was known for being very harsh to Christians. Lucian was put in prison for a long time.

In prison, Lucian kept praying and teaching other prisoners. Even though he was hungry and cold, he stayed strong in his faith. He also celebrated the Eucharist secretly in prison.

Some say that Lucian was tortured because he refused to give up his faith. Others say he was starved to death. The details are not clear. But everyone agrees that he stayed faithful to Jesus until the very end.

Lucian died in prison around the year 312. Christians remembered him as a hero of the faith. They told stories about his courage and his love for Scripture.
