Saint Paschal Baylon

Saint Paschal Baylon was a humble man from Spain. He was born in 1540 and died in 1592. He lived during a time when the Church was facing many challenges. He was not a priest or a bishop. He was a lay brother in the Franciscan order. He served God by living simply and working hard.

His full name was Paschal Baylón y Jubera. Sometimes people just call him Paschal. In Latin, his name is Paschalis. He got his name because he was born on the feast of Pentecost, which is sometimes called “Pasch of the Holy Ghost” in Spain. His parents named him Paschal to honor that feast.

Paschal is remembered most for his love for Jesus in the Eucharist. He spent much of his life in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. He had a deep trust in God and always stayed close to the teachings of the Church. Even though he was poor and simple, many people came to him for advice.

He was never famous in his lifetime, but he lived a life of quiet holiness. After he died, stories spread about his goodness and his strong faith. Over time, the Church came to see him as a saint. Today he is honored by many people, especially those who love the Eucharist.

Paschal’s story shows that anyone can become a saint. You do not need to be rich or important. You just need to love God and follow Jesus. That is what Paschal did, day after day, for his whole life.

Paschal was born in a small village in Spain called Torrehermosa. His parents were poor farmers. They were also very faithful Catholics. They taught Paschal to pray from a young age. He helped his family by working as a shepherd when he was just a boy.

While watching the sheep, Paschal would pray. He did not waste his time. He carried a rosary with him and said many prayers during the day. He also brought religious books, even though he had to teach himself how to read. He had a strong desire to learn about God.

He did not go to school. His parents could not afford it. But Paschal was eager to learn. He learned to read by asking others for help. He would ask travelers and priests to teach him. He used what he learned to grow in his faith.

People in the village noticed that Paschal was kind and honest. He did not argue or lie. He did not complain when things were hard. He was cheerful and worked hard. Even as a boy, others could see that he had something special.

When he was about 24, Paschal joined the Franciscan order. He became a lay brother. This means he was not a priest, but he lived in the monastery and followed the Franciscan rule. He took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

In the monastery, Paschal did simple jobs. He worked in the kitchen. He cleaned. He helped with daily chores. He never asked for special treatment. He was happy to serve. He saw every task as a way to love God.

He also spent many hours in prayer. He would kneel before the Blessed Sacrament and pray in silence. He loved being close to Jesus in the Eucharist. People often saw him smiling and peaceful after his time in prayer.

Paschal was officially named a saint in 1690. This means the Church recognized his life of holiness. He is now honored by Catholics around the world. His example continues to guide people who want to live simply and follow Jesus.

He was later named the patron saint of Eucharistic congresses and societies. These are groups that focus on honoring the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Paschal is also seen as a protector for shepherds and cooks, since he had worked as both.

His feast day is May 17. This is the day the Church remembers him each year. On this day, many people attend Mass and pray before the Eucharist in his memory. He is especially honored in Spain and in Franciscan communities.

Paschal’s body is kept in Villarreal, Spain. Many pilgrims visit his tomb. Some leave written prayers or light candles. They come to thank God for Paschal’s life and to ask for his help.
