Saint Anthony Mary Gianelli

Saint Anthony Mary Gianelli, sometimes called Antonio Maria Gianelli, was a bishop and founder of a religious order in Italy. He lived in the 1800s and spent his life helping others, especially the poor and the sick. He was known for his strong faith, simple lifestyle, and deep care for the people he served. Anthony was born in a small farming village in northern Italy. He came from a poor but devout family. Even as a boy, he showed signs of deep faith and a desire to follow God’s call. Throughout his life, Anthony stayed close to the people. He did not seek power or fame. He served as a parish priest, teacher, founder, and bishop, always with humility. His work touched many lives, and he never forgot where he came from.

Anthony Mary Gianelli was born on April 12, 1789, in the village of Cerreta, near Genoa in northern Italy. His parents were poor farmers who worked hard to raise their children in the faith. They had little money, but they trusted in God and did their best to teach their children right from wrong.

From a young age, Anthony showed signs of deep devotion. He loved going to church and would often be found praying alone. He helped at Mass and showed great respect for priests. Those around him believed he had a calling to the priesthood.

Because his family was poor, it was hard to imagine how Anthony could become a priest. Seminary training cost money, and the road was not easy. But a local priest noticed the boy’s promise and helped him begin his studies. Others in the village also gave support. God opened doors that seemed closed.

Anthony did well in school and stayed focused on his goal. He was not distracted by worldly things. He wanted only to serve God and His people. He was ordained a priest in 1812 when he was just 23 years old.

After his ordination, he was sent to serve in different places. He worked in small towns and among simple people. He preached clearly and simply so that everyone could understand. He showed great care for the sick and the poor. People came to trust him and listen to him.

As a young priest, Anthony Mary Gianelli worked in many parishes. He became known for his preaching. His words were simple but full of meaning. He wanted people to understand the Gospel and live it in their daily lives.

He also worked as a teacher. He taught at seminaries and helped young men prepare for the priesthood. He encouraged them to be holy and to stay close to the people. He believed that a priest should not be distant or proud but should be like Christ, serving others.

In 1827, Anthony Mary Gianelli founded the Sisters of Our Lady of the Garden. These sisters were dedicated to helping the sick, teaching children, and serving the poor. He chose the name because he wanted Mary to be their model. Like a garden that grows quietly, their work was meant to bring beauty and peace into the world.

He gave the sisters clear and simple rules. They were to live in community, pray together, and serve where they were most needed. Many young women joined. The congregation grew and spread to other places in Italy and later to other parts of the world.

In 1838, Anthony was named bishop of Bobbio, a small diocese in northern Italy. As bishop, he focused on renewing the faith of the people. He visited parishes, met with priests, and helped the poor. He also encouraged education and training for young people.

He worked hard to bring peace and order to the diocese. Some areas were struggling with political unrest and poverty. He stayed close to the people and reminded them to trust in God. He lived simply, like a parish priest, even though he was now a bishop.

He was beatified in 1925 by Pope Pius XI and canonized in 1951 by Pope Pius XII. The Church declared that his life showed true Christian virtue and that he was worthy to be called a saint. His feast day is celebrated each year on June 7.

Saint Anthony Mary Gianelli is the patron of the diocese of Bobbio and is also known as a patron of workers and teachers. The religious congregation he founded, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Garden, continues his mission today in many countries.

As bishop of Bobbio, he didn’t sit around in a big chair. He walked everywhere to visit people. Rain or shine.

He fixed churches, trained good priests, and helped the people pray better. No lazy days in Bobbio.

He once gave away most of his food during a famine. Then fasted like it was no big deal.

He slept very little. He said he’d rest later—in heaven.

He had a big soft spot for orphans. He made sure they had homes, food, and love.

He used to say, “Do good and disappear.” He wasn’t in it for attention. Just action.

His health got bad from all the work, and he died young—only 57.

After he died, miracles were said to happen through his prayers. People started saying, “This guy’s the real deal.”

He was made a saint in 1951 by Pope Pius XII. Long wait, but totally worth it.

He’s the patron saint of the Diocese of Bobbio and the sisters he founded. He’s also a great one to pray to if you’re doing hard work for others.
