Materials Needed:
- Several stacks of newspapers
- Masking tape
Setup Instructions:
- Divide the group into teams. Five or six people per team works best.
- Give each team an equal amount of newspaper and masking tape.
- Designate a flat, open area for each team to work on their tower.
- Set a timer for the chosen time limit (10 minutes is common).
Game Play Instructions:
- Explain that each team will build a freestanding tower using only the materials given.
- Tell teams that “freestanding” means the tower cannot lean against anything or be held by anyone. It must stand on its own.
- Start the timer and let the teams begin building.
- When time is up, measure each tower to find the tallest one.
- Declare the winning team.
Additional Notes:
- For more of a challenge, remove the masking tape from the game. Teams will need to find creative ways to fold or stack the newspaper.
- You can adjust the time limit based on the age and skill of the participants.
- Make sure the workspace is safe. Remove obstacles or items that could cause tripping.
- Remind everyone to handle scissors or other tools safely if they are used.
