Jesus often used stories called parables to help people understand God’s Kingdom. In Matthew 22:1–14, Jesus tells the story of a king who prepares a wedding feast for his son. Everything is ready, but the invited guests refuse to come. Some are too busy with their own plans. The king then sends his servants to invite people from the roads and streets. Soon, the wedding hall is filled with guests.

The Wedding Feast Escape Puzzle helps children explore this parable through word puzzles, a maze, decoding challenges, and Scripture clues. As they solve each puzzle, they uncover part of an important message:

God invites everyone. Choose to respond!

This shows how to do a simple series of puzzles for this topic. For more elaborate ideas, see How to Create an Escape Room.

God’s Invitation

The king in the parable represents God. The wedding feast represents the joy of God’s Kingdom. Like the king, God extends an invitation. He wants people to know him, love him, and share in his joy.

God’s invitation is not only for people who seem important or perfect. It is offered to everyone. The servants go out to the roads and invite all the people they can find.

This reminds us that every person is welcome in God’s family. We are also called to welcome others, especially people who feel lonely, forgotten, or left out.

More Than an Invitation

Receiving an invitation does not automatically mean that someone will attend the celebration. The first guests in the parable receive invitations, but they make excuses and refuse to come.

Children can understand this part of the story by thinking about the invitations God gives us every day. God invites us to pray, participate in Mass, forgive people, help those in need, tell the truth, and treat others with love.

We sometimes make excuses:

  • “I’m too busy to pray.”
  • “I don’t want to help.”
  • “Someone else can include the new student.”
  • “I’m still angry, so I won’t forgive.”
  • “I know the right thing to do, but I don’t feel like doing it.”

God continues to invite us, but we must decide how we will respond.

Begin the Escape Puzzle

Before beginning, read Matthew 22:1–10 together. If you are using the longer Gospel reading, continue through verse 14.

Explain that children will complete five challenges. Each correct solution will reveal a clue word. At the end, the clue words will unlock the final message.

Children can complete the puzzles individually, with partners, or in small teams. Allow approximately 25 to 35 minutes.

Puzzle One: The Missing Invitations

The first challenge is a word search containing important words from the Gospel:

KING — SON — FEAST — GUESTS — WEDDING — INVITATION — KINGDOM — EVERYONE

After finding the listed words, children use the remaining letters to uncover their first clue word:

GOD

Ask: Who does the king in Jesus’ parable help us think about?

Puzzle Two: The Excuse Decoder

The invited guests are busy with other things and refuse to attend the feast. In this challenge, children use a simple letter, number, or symbol code to decode a hidden word.

The answer is:

INVITES

Ask: What are some ways God invites us to grow closer to him?

Puzzle Three: Follow the Roads

The king tells his servants to go out to the roads and invite everyone they find. Children complete a maze that leads from the roads to the wedding feast.

Letters collected along the correct path spell:

EVERYONE

Ask: Who is welcome in God’s Kingdom? How can we help someone feel welcome?

Puzzle Four: The Banquet Table

The wedding hall fills with guests. In this puzzle, children use clues to place guests in the correct seats around a banquet table.

When everyone is seated correctly, the marked letters reveal:

CHOOSE

Ask: Why can’t another person answer God’s invitation for us?

Puzzle Five: Your RSVP

An RSVP tells the host whether someone plans to attend an event. In this challenge, children decide whether different actions show someone accepting or ignoring God’s invitation.

Actions that accept the invitation might include:

  • Praying even when we are busy
  • Welcoming someone who feels left out
  • Forgiving a person who hurt us
  • Helping without being asked
  • Listening carefully to God’s Word
  • Participating in Mass

Actions that ignore the invitation might include:

  • Making excuses
  • Refusing to help
  • Leaving someone out
  • Choosing dishonesty
  • Ignoring someone who needs kindness

Correctly sorting the actions reveals the final clue word:

RESPOND

Children arrange all five clue words in order:

GOD — INVITES — EVERYONE — CHOOSE — RESPOND

The completed message is:

God invites everyone. Choose to respond!

God’s invitation is a gift. We do not earn it by solving puzzles or being perfect. God invites us because he loves us. Our response is to trust him and allow that love to shape our choices.

What About the Wedding Garment?

If you read Matthew 22:1–14, the parable also mentions a guest who arrives without a wedding garment. Explain that accepting God’s invitation includes preparing our hearts and trying to live as Jesus teaches.

We cannot simply say that we follow Jesus while refusing to let his love change us. Prayer, forgiveness, kindness, honesty, and care for others are signs that we are trying to follow him.

Make a Personal RSVP

Invite each child to finish these sentences:

This week, I will say yes to God by __________________________.

One person I can welcome is _________________________________.

One excuse I will try to overcome is _________________________.

Children may keep their responses private or share one answer with the group.

Closing Prayer

Loving God,
thank you for inviting everyone
to share the joy of your Kingdom.

Help us recognize your invitations.
Give us the courage to say yes.
Teach us to pray, forgive, help others,
and welcome people who feel left out.

Help our choices show
that we want to follow Jesus.

Amen.
