The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a devotion to our blessed Mother which helps us reflect on her love of God. By saying “yes” to God our Father and agreeing to be the mother of our Lord, she showed that she was entirely willing to cooperate with God’s plan for our redemption. Her heart experienced both joy and sorrow as a result of her “fiat” (“let it be”).
Through this devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we seek to have a heart more like Mary’s, totally devoted and obedient to God.
The Feast for the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary is held on the Saturday following the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Daily Mass Readings for the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
- First Reading – Isaiah 61:9-11: “I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of my soul; for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation, and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels.”
- Responsorial Psalm – 1 Samuel 2: “My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.”
- Gospel – Luke 2:41-51: “He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.”
The First Five Saturdays devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is also called the Act of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During the apparitions at Fatima, our Blessed Mother asked Lucia that Russia be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart through this devotion. Lucia also received another vision several years later to do this devotion in reparation for the atonement of sins.
