Mass Readings and Free Resources

May 2023 invites us to walk with Jesus and trust him, even when the path is not clear. The readings speak about staying close to him and caring for others. They remind us that God does not leave us alone. We are guided and supported each day. The month also points us outward. Filled with the Holy Spirit, we are sent to share hope, love, and faith with the world as one Church.

May 2023 is Year A in the Sunday liturgical cycle and Year 1 in the weekday cycle.

Sundays and Holy Days in May 2023

5th Sunday of Easter

Sunday, May 7

The 5th Sunday of Easter Year A reminds us to trust Jesus. He tells his friends not to be afraid and asks them to believe in him. He says he is the way to the Father. These words bring comfort and hope. They remind us that Jesus stays close to us and leads us forward, even when we feel unsure or confused.

The readings also speak about service and shared work. The early Church learns to care for all its people. Each person has a role to play. We are called living stones, built on Jesus. Faith is not only belief. It shows in how we serve, help others, and live each day.

6th Sunday of Easter

Sunday, May 14

The 6th Sunday of Easter Year A speaks about staying close to God each day. The readings show faith moving into new places and new lives. People hear the message and respond with joy. Praise rises up, and hope is shared out loud. Jesus reminds his followers that love shows itself through actions and trust.

This Sunday also centers on the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises help, comfort, and guidance that will not fade. Believers are not left alone. They are called to speak with care, live with courage, and hold on during hard times. God remains near, shaping daily life through love and faith.

The Ascension of the Lord

Sunday, May 21
Traditionally the Ascension of Our Lord was held 40 days after Easter, falling on a Thursday. However in most dioceses in the United States, the observance of the Solemnity of the Ascension is moved to the following Sunday, superseding the 7th Sunday of Easter.

The Ascension of the Lord Year A looks to the moment when Jesus returns to the Father. The disciples watch him rise, unsure of what comes next. Yet they are not left in fear. Jesus assures them that his presence will remain. His rule reaches beyond what can be seen. This brings hope and trust as the Church waits and listens.

This feast also points us outward. Jesus sends his followers to teach, baptize, and share what they have received. The work is not finished. Each believer takes part in it. With help from the Holy Spirit, the Church moves forward. Jesus stays close, guiding his people as they live and share the faith.

7th Sunday of Easter

Sunday, May 21
In most dioceses in the United States, the observance of the Solemnity of the Ascension is moved to the following Sunday, superseding the 7th Sunday of Easter. See readings and resources for the Ascension of the Lord Year A instead.

The Ascension of the Lord Year A marks a turning point for the followers of Jesus. They see him lifted from their sight, and life begins to change. Even so, they are not alone. Jesus promises to remain with them. His care does not end. The Church learns to wait, trust, and stay open to what comes next.

This day also reminds us that faith is meant to be shared. Jesus sends his friends into the world with a clear task. They are to teach, welcome new believers, and live what they have learned. The Spirit gives help along the way. Jesus continues to guide his people as they serve and grow together.

Pentecost

Sunday, May 28

Pentecost Year A celebrates the moment when the Spirit comes in power. The disciples are changed. Fear gives way to courage. Voices rise, and people understand one another. What was broken is drawn together. The Spirit brings life, movement, and new purpose. This day marks the start of the Church’s public life and its call to reach all people.

Pentecost also speaks to us now. The Spirit still moves among believers. We are given different gifts, yet we belong to one body. The Spirit helps us pray, guides our choices, and sends us out. We are called to share peace, forgiveness, and hope as we live the message of Jesus each day.
